Nadia's family moved from Khulna to Dhaka in January, and she got admitted to Class Seven at a new school. On her first day she sat alone on the last bench. At tiffin time the other girls went out to play in groups, but Nadia stayed in the classroom with her lunch box.

Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain was a writer, an educationist and a social reformer. She was born on 9 December 1880 in the village of Pairabondh in Rangpur. Last December, when our annual examination was over, my father took us to Sylhet by train. We reached Kamalapur Railway Station at eight in the morning. The station was crowded with passengers, porters and hawkers. My father had bought the tickets online a week earlier, so we did not have to stand in a long queue. Our intercity train left the platform on time.
I got a seat by the window. Soon the busy city was left behind, and green paddy fields, ponds and small villages began to run past us. Children waved at the train, and cows grazed quietly in the fields. Hawkers came into our compartment selling tea, peanuts and newspapers. My little brother bought a packet of peanuts and shared it with a boy sitting across from us.
After Srimangal, the scenery changed. Tea gardens covered the small hills on both sides of the railway line, and women were plucking tea leaves with baskets on their backs. It was the most beautiful sight of the journey.

Florence Nightingale is remembered as the founder of modern nursing. She was born on 12 May 1820 in Florence, a city in Italy, and she was named after that city. Her parents were rich English people, and they wanted her to marry and live a comfortable life. But Florence believed that she was called to serve the sick. At that time nursing was not thought of as a respectable job, and her family was strongly against it. In 1851 she went to Germany and trained as a nurse.
In 1854 the Crimean War broke out. Florence went to a British army hospital in Scutari, in Turkey, with a team of 38 nurses. The hospital was dirty, and many wounded soldiers were dying of disease. Florence and her team cleaned the wards, washed the clothes and cooked good food for the patients. At night she walked through the long wards with a lamp in her hand to check on the soldiers. The soldiers lovingly called her 'The Lady with the Lamp'.
After the war, in 1860, she set up a school for nurses at St Thomas' Hospital in London. She died on 13 August 1910. Today 12 May, her birthday, is observed as International Nurses Day.
