Louis Pasteur was a great French scientist. He was born on 27 December 1822 in Dole, a small town in France. His father was a tanner, a man who makes leather. As a boy, Louis loved painting more than studying. Later he became interested in science and went to Paris to study at a famous college, the École Normale Supérieure.

Pasteur found that very small living things called germs make milk and fruit juice go bad. He showed that heating milk for a short time kills most of these germs. This process is still called pasteurisation, after his name. Today most packet milk in the shops is pasteurised.

Pasteur also worked to protect people from diseases. In 1885 a nine-year-old boy named Joseph Meister was bitten by a mad dog. Everyone thought the boy would die of rabies. Read the following text and answer questions 5, 6 and 7.

The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world. It lies in the south-west of Bangladesh and in the state of West Bengal in India. The whole forest covers about 10,000 square kilometres, and about 6,000 square kilometres of it are in Bangladesh. In our country, it spreads over parts of three districts: Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat.

The forest takes its name from the sundari tree, which grows there in large numbers. Mangrove trees can live in salty water. Many of them have special roots that grow up out of the mud to take in air.

The Sundarbans is the home of the Royal Bengal Tiger. Spotted deer, monkeys, crocodiles and many kinds of birds and fish also live there. Thousands of people depend on the forest. Woodcutters, fishermen and honey collectors earn their living from it.

The forest also protects our coast. When a cyclone comes from the Bay of Bengal, the trees reduce the force of the wind and the waves. In 1997, UNESCO declared the Sundarbans a World Heritage Site.
